Stanford |

The small village of Stanford is popular for its rural tranquility, leafy streets, historical architecture, river trips, spectacular fynbos and abundant animal and bird life. When Hermanus was still Hermanuspietersfontein and everyone pulled up theirs noses at this lowly fisherman's village, Stanford was the place to be. During the 1920s and 1930s it was the economic hub of the area - and with it came the wealth that built many of the lovely old houses that grace Stanford's core area today. The Klein Rivier Mountains is the range encompassing the village and the area is rich in culture and heritage with the local historical sites including the first farmhouse, school, post office, graveyard, police station, Bachelor's Hope town house, Okkie Smuts School, Stanford House and the original market square dating back to 1785 are one of the few left undeveloped in South Africa. The local microbrewery produces delicious ale, and the cheese factory produces a variety of delectable Swiss cheeses and is the only local producer of Gruyère cheese. Stanford is now regarded as a fast developing wine area. Many vineyards will come into fruition in the next few years. Raka, a specialist wine farm, has award-winning Shiraz, Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc. Sir Robert Stanford's Home of Art, Craft, Antiques and Collectables, situated on his original farmhouse, sells local wares and adds to the cosmopolitan vibe of Stanford village. |
